Helpful Spanish Phrases for Travelers
Provided by
In Spanish, every letter is pronounced and the accent usually is on the next to the last syllable. Exceptions to this are indicated with an accent mark. The following letters are pronounced as follows:

a like the a in ah
i like the ee in beet
u like the oo in loot
ñ like the ni in senior
e like the e in deck
o like the o in cold
y like the ea in eat
ll like the y in kayak

The h is silent in Spanish, and the Spanish j is pronounced like the h in horse. G before a, o, u, or a consonant is hard (like in gate); when before e or i, it's soft, sounding just slightly harder than the h in hay. When g appears with u (gu), the u sounds like the English w. b and v sound the same, pretty much like a b in English. C before a, o, and u is hard like the English k; before e and i it's soft like the English s.
